So, uh...

Okay, this is embarrassing.

I was doing the post-period cleaning of the little holes along the rim with a toothpick, as one does because they get crud in there, and got startled by a cat ("LOVE!" says the cat. "ARGH" says me. "YOWCH" says the divacup). I wasn't paying attention to how much pressure was on the other end of the toothpick. Clearly, the answer should have been 'none or only a little as it passes through the hole' instead of 'approximately enough that silicone can't take it anymore', and long story short, it has a puncture now where a puncture should not be. I'm pretty sure that I have to buy a new one.

If I don't make it to the one and only store in town that carries them before next month, or have one of those wondrous "oh, you thought you were done? HA HA GUESS WHAT" moments that the menses are sometimes prone to, think it'd work as a temporary stopgap even though the puncture is in the region of where the blood goes? That doesn't seem very hygienic. Also seems like it'd leak. What can I do with the divacup besides just throw it away?

Seen some suggestions, actually... one for a bottle topper, one for slicing the stem off and using it for mini plants.

Bah. I am le sad. My poor little dude!

YOU SERVED ME WELL FOR ALMOST TWO YEARS, LOVELY CUP. I WILL MOURN YOUR STAINED, SILICONE WONDER.

ARSE!!!

I have really got to break myself of this instant association between 'posterior' and 'butt'. I know that it just means further back in position, but my first inclination is "is that one closer to my ass? It's the posterior one". And that just doesn't work.

Sometimes, I wonder why I bother and I wonder if I'm being used. They say what disarms people most is humour, which was coincidentally the daily prompt for the 24th. However, I am tired of being the funnyman with the grin on my face. I am tired of being looked at as though I don't understand anything, and having my words and values discarded out of hand simply because I brought them up.

There are those who call me morbid.

It is funny that, from those who do, I do not care. I have never, or rarely, felt judgement from those. Certainly not due to any morbid qualities.

I double-majored in college, am working towards medical school, and yet I am looked upon as being lesser. I offer solutions to things complained about, and have those solutions dashed upon the ground-- I suspect out of a lack of motive or real want for a solution on the parts of those to whom the solutions are offered.

Perhaps I should be more biting. Not sarcastic, but biting. The harsh truths. Learn to speak up, and to call others on their bullshit in places other than my own mind. Perhaps I should be more hesitant to offer aid to those in need.

I wonder what they would think of me then.

I wonder what my patron would.

I wonder if I know how to break the habit.

Gacked from [personal profile] speak_me_fair at CISPA is the new SOPA
Here's their next move: The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA, would obliterate any semblance of online privacy in the United States.

And CISPA would provide a victory for content owners who were shell-shocked by the unprecedented outpouring of activism in opposition to SOPA and Internet censorship.

The House of Representatives is planning to take up CISPA during the week of April 23. Click here to ask your lawmakers to oppose it.

SOPA was pushed as a remedy to the supposed economic threat of online piracy -- but economic fear-mongering didn't quite do the trick.

So those concerned about copyright are engaging in sleight of hand, appending their legislation to a bill that most Americans will assume is about keeping them safe from bad guys.

This so-called cyber security bill aims to prevent theft of "government information" and "intellectual property" and could let ISPs block your access to websites -- or the whole Internet.

Don't let them push this back-door SOPA. Click here to demand that your lawmakers oppose CISPA.

CISPA also encourages companies to share information about you with the government and other corporations.

That data could then be used for just about anything -- from prosecuting crimes to ad placements.

And perhaps worst of all, CISPA supercedes all other online privacy protections.

Please click here to urge your lawmakers to oppose CISPA when it comes up for a vote this month.

Thanks for fighting for the Internet.

Seriously. WHAT THE FLYING FUCK WORLD.

"File-sharers, beware: By July 12, major US Internet service providers (ISPs) will voluntarily begin serving as copyright police for the entertainment industry, according to Cary Sherman, chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The so-called “six-strikes” plan is said to be one of the most effective anti-piracy efforts ever established in the US."

The article goes on to give details. After six notices, internet providers will decide to throttle a person's internet speed, or cut it off altogether. I don't know if they will crack down on torrents only, or if it is up to the internet provider. I get the sense it is up to the internet provider. So some people could get away with downloading non torrents, while others might get their internet service cut off. I urge you to click it and read, as we all know people who download.

No more downloading eps of your favorite shows for vidding, gifs, or fanfiction art. No more downloading screencaps possibly. I'm so sorry my friends. I don't even know if BT Guard will work to protect you, but I would google it if I were you. It is a professional service that supposedly can protect you from the invasive eyes of your internet provider.

Just, my friends, please make each other aware. Please be aware of the date JULY 12TH. Mark your calendar and double check with your internet provider by then. If you start receiving notices of downloaded activity, this is why. And your internet service could be throttled or cut off.

Fox News confirms this:

Basically, I've decided that I'm going to start posting fic to my journals-- here on DW, and on LJ. There's really no point in making a separate account just to do that, and frankly, if anyone gets up in arms over the writing fic part... well. Don't like, don't read. Your kink is not my kink and that's okay. My kink is not your kink and that's okay too.

Seriously?

ditaykan: (I'm surrounded by idiots.)
Today I got told that two of the places I will hang out on when I'm on the internet-- fanfiction.net and DeviantArt, specifically-- are creepy. First off, if that's what you consider creepy, what the hell havens of safety and kindergarten have you been hanging out on? Or what the hell fic have you been looking for, because it sure ain't what I've been looking at. For the record, I know that these people do hang out on at least DeviantArt. Apparently the people who find and favourite their art are 'so creepy' that they can only stand to go to their pages in the dark, deep depths and leave a 'thanks for the fave!' and then vanish, shivering from the weird, into the safer shallows of the 'net.

If you consider those places creepy and I hang out there... what do you make of me? It feels like a slap in the face, that they consider me creepy and horrible. These are people I've known since high school. What exactly am I supposed to make of that? "We've known you for so long we know you aren't bad"? "We keep you around out of obligation"? "You're creepy but you're ours so you're okay"? They may say that part of the reason they like me is that I make no apologies for who I am, but frankly, if they're going to say how bad and wrong and terrible places I go or things I read or whatever are... it sure as hell makes me feel like I have to. Or that I do need to hide aspects.

By association, I am a creepy fucker. Fine. Screw you too. I don't complain when you make bloody art or sing torture murder porn songs. I don't complain when you make psychopathic, amoral, violent characters. Should I start?

We defeated SOPA and PIPA, but the battle is not over yet. You have another head on this hydra to slay, and it's getting frightfully little attention. Feel free to repost this anywhere you like.

ACTA -

1. ACTA isn’t the “European” SOPA. It’s nearly GLOBAL, and will apply to every country that signs the treaty.

2. ACTA is far more aggressive. ACTA will not simply affect websites and have them blocked out of the internet - its measures go as far as surveillance of anything you share through private channels.

3. ACTA doesn’t have a campaign against it that is as wide-spread and organized as the SOPA one. This is DANGEROUS, as there’s less time between now and the final signing of ACTA.

4. ACTA has effects on healthcare, trade, and even tourism.

5. ACTA has to be stopped.

Let’s start spreading the word and organizing a good, solid response to it.

ditaykan: (Soldier since the day I was born)
On this eighteenth day of the month of January in the year of two thousand and eleven After Common Era, we fight for the greatest enabler of free communication the world has ever known.

I would not know many of my greatest friends without it, nor have kept in close contact with others who may have moved away. The internet is an asset and a tool.

Therefore, we cannot allow it to be abused and crippled by those who fear losing thousands of dollars among the billions they make per year, among those-- appropriately, capslocked by many-- NINETY-FOUR MILLION DOLLARS donated to buy the votes of our congressmen, many of whom have demonstrated that they have only the faintest grasp of how the internet works. We cannot allow it to be destroyed by these people.

Fandom would be a burning wreckage, the remnants gathering in secret places and hoping against hope that no trolls find us.

It is a clumsy, misguided thing.

We can only hope that it passes not. That the efforts of the little sites and the big names-- Wikipedia, Reddit, the others-- are effective.

What I can tell you is that if it does pass, I will be even less inclined to give my money to those who wrecked the home of some of my greatest joys... for what comparatively is a few coins in their pocket.

I was gonna update this with much happier stuff, but for the past week I've just been so enraged with LJ's asshattery that I've had it to here.

In case you didn't know, on 12/12 they first announced sneakily on the Russian journal of LJ's design guy that with new changes being implemented tomorrow, there will be no more subject lines in comments and that this change was "non-negotiable" (good round-up and translation here). I'm sure you all realize that this will basically make fandom and RP communities unusable. LJ's staff, however, doesn't give a shit. At least 18 pages of 100% negative feedback didn't sway them.

They've backpedaled some and will make keeping comment subject lines optional in some S2 styles, but the default (that 99% of communities are running right now) will decidedly be subject-less! Not to mention that their new and frankly, fucking ugly design will take forever to load and make the site a pain to use on mobile browsers.

And oh, it looks like they might be taking away the drop-down menu to select icons as well, so you'll have to load all your icons as pictures to select them. Lovely. (I will beta-test tonight to see if this is actually true.)

Really, I don't know why I'm surprised. LJ is always fucking with the parts of the site that actually work and breaking them, so this is just another instance of that. Because seriously, who are subject lines hurting by just being there? (And no, it can't be a matter of server strain, considering the new "graphic" interface will definitely be using up more resources - so much fun when there's DDoS attacks!)
As far as I know, they've never once listened to their customers, so those thousands of comments already posted probably won't do shit. I've left a message expressing my concerns about the new comment pages here anyway; so if you want to do that too, go for it! If anything, it helps with the rage. ;)

FYI: Dreamwidth is feeling Christmasy has reacted to LJ's bullshit and has open account creation (no invite codes needed) for the rest of the week. Might be a good idea to get your back-up or new home, whatever the case may be, up and running now.

So more like weekly happy: I graduate in five days.

Weekly neuroses: I GRADUATE IN FIVE DAYS OH GODS WHY

That's about it. I'm paranoid that the college will figure out they've made a horrible mistake and neglect to give me the diploma after all.

Also, I have to read two Shakespeare plays, review several chapters of bio yet, and finish this paper (only three pages long though, so that's good and comparatively easy).

Woot!

First off, daily happy(s): The book I had to read for a ten page paper is actually a pretty good read. "The Return of the Vikings: The Battle of Maldon 991" by Donald Scragg, professor emeritus at... somewhere.

Also, it is my birthday. My FB has been exploding with 'happy birthdays' and I got a text from a lovely friend whom I may well see for bar trivia tomorrow. My birthday also happens to fall on the International Day of the Ninja, Faunalia, and Krampus.

Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude.

So I'm supposed to be graduating this December with two Bachelor's. Assuming I haven't screwed something up, which I'm certain that I have, somehow. So it's time to fret, try to make my GPA as high as it can be (which at the moment... well, one is pretty good and the other could be higher), and try to double check. Thus, I'm really distracted trying to write good papers, take care of those few things, and acquire stuff to walk because if I don't my mom will have my head.

Except that part is restored from a draft that LJ burped and claimed was finished-gone about a week ago, so I've seen my advisor and actually found out that everything is greenlit for graduation and all I had to do was buy the robes (hat and robes = $42. Holy crap). Oh, and pass my classes.

Which is the reason I haven't actually done anything-- okay, I went out with friends that one time and won at bar trivia, shhhhhhh. Other than that, nada. Haven't even had the time or inclination to go to the post office, which I really should do since I've owed a friend something through the mail for about a month now, but heck, now I get to send it with a graduation invitation card.

We went to an alpaca extravaganza/fair thing today, for yarn and maybe a sweater for me for the winter holidays (Christmas, Yule, etc). I tried on a few things, liked two of them enough to perhaps buy... except for the "Oh, that would be lovely... if you lost fifty pounds", the "you can't wear that sweater because your breasts are too big" (a nice lady who was also at the fair suggested a necklace to simulate a v-neck, which is an idea I liked. Mom rejected it), and declaration that folding the cuffs up for sweater sleeves that my arms were too short for was 'ugly'. I suspect she's working off of what was fashionable when she was younger. It's either that or she wants me, 23, to dress like a middle-aged housewife to feel better about herself.

So basically I'm too fat, my boobs are too big, and my arms are too short for me to have a nice sweater that I like as a gift. And I don't know how to counter this, because the response is always "Oh, (name), I just want you to be happy and look good". Well, I don't want to be insulted whenever I look for clothes or verbally patted on the head when I protest that I like my body!

You know, I should really start posting a daily happy. Otherwise, this journal is pretty depressing.
