Today, someone whose blog I read wrote on being attacked by an ‘American’ Christian who apparently took umbrage with a Canadian displaying national pride on Canada Day, claiming that it was mocking US citizens. His/her comments were mean, hurtful, and frightening considering this person has apparently begun tracking down personal information.
I’m a citizen of the United States by birth, and though not a Christian, can’t think that any of my actual Christian friends would take issue with Stephanie Pearl-McPhee in any way– certainly not for the way that she chose to get married to a man who has been with her for something like two decades.
I have never felt offended by her showing national pride on a national holiday devoted to that. It would be like someone getting angry at me for carrying a flag around on July 4th, or blogging about the history of the US on the same day. Stephanie has been nothing but friendly to US citizens, and I don’t see anything ‘anti-American’ about praising Canada in that post– for one thing, last I checked, Canada is part of North America. This person is either a troll, mentally ill, or has a serious hate for Canadians.
This person is also not very inventive. I can think of a thousand worse insults (in general) than ‘chicken’ and ‘p***y’. Besides, it’s not the worst criticism at all– and what other organ has to stretch that wide and help push so long in life? It’s not ‘weak’! What’s wrong with rescuing your husband when he was caught in the snow? And what does being a woman have to do with it?
